Our Sunfish fleet began racing in the summer of 2000 using KYC boats and a few privately owned boats. Since then more people have used their own boats for racing. Our fleet is always looking for more racers and due to the popularity of the Sunfish there always seem to be boats for sale in the area. So get a boat and race with us!
The Sunfish fleet races in the afternoon on Sundays and holidays. The course is usually windward-leeward windward with buoys rounded to port and with the start/finish line in the middle of the windward leg. A triangle course is sailed when the Sunfish fleet races within the Portsmouth Handicap fleet. We encourage boating members and Junior Sailors to join our fleet races.
The Sunfish fleet races using the Delayed Start System in an attempt to make the competition closer. A boat that wins a race will give the rest of the fleet a ten second head start for the next race. And heres the best part: as long as the same boat keeps winning the head start for the rest of the fleet keeps increasing (an additional ten seconds per race)! The top three skippers at the conclusion of the season will have their names engraved on the Sunfish Fleet Season Championship trophy. This trophy is displayed prominently near the fireplace in the clubhouse.
The Sunfish fleet is always looking
for ways to promote the Sunfish class in addition to the regular
racing schedule. Last year we had a regatta. Years ago relay races
were popular. Our fleet members are always available to help with
boat rigging, tips for racing and rig tuning, boat maintenance,
etc. So, join our fleet and get the most out of your Sunfish experience.
