Captain's corner:

Welcome to the Lightning Fleet at KYC. If you are thinking about getting involved with sailing and/or sailboat racing on beautiful Keuka Lake, there is no better way for a person to get started than by sailing on a Lightning. However, you don’t need a boat to join our fleet. Heck, you don’t even have to sail. You just need to like to have a good time.

People of all ages and abilities sail Lightning’s. They are sturdy, quick, easy to sail, and one of the least expensive boats to own and race. Boats 20 years old are still competitive! The Lighting class is one of the most active classes in the world and probably the most fun. If you want to expand your horizons beyond Keuka Lake, there is a Lightning Regatta in our region almost every weekend of the summer.

The Keuka Lightning fleet places as much emphasis on socializing (ok, more emphasis) as we do on getting our boats out to race on Sundays. Since 1954, when our fleet started, newcomers have always been welcome, with or without a boat. While time on the boats is always a wonderful adventure, and our racing is competitive, we can guarantee that the friendships you make with others in the Lightning fleet will be the most rewarding and lasting benefit of sailing a Lightning.

Please give me a call or email me if you would like more information or to arrange for a trial sail in a Lightning. If you would like to learn to crew, we can arrange to get you out for a race and if you want to start racing your own boat, we will be glad to assist you with more help and advice than you probably want.

• First race at 11:30
• Five races, No throw-outs, No warning gun after 3:30 PM
